Major obstruction – Closure of A40 West for a few weekends

As part of the REM work on the West Island, a segment of Highway 40 West will be completely closed from Friday, September 18 (10 p.m.) to Monday, September 21 (5 a.m.) and on other weekends in September and October. Plan ahead: avoid the area.

These closures are needed for the construction of a portal frame for the REM elevated structure. A portal frame, a portion of the elevated structure supported by two pillars, will be installed to help support loads while leaving a clear space for vehicle traffic. 

As part of this undertaking, the A40 West will be completely closed on the following weekends:

  • (COMPLETED) Friday, September 18 from 10:00 p.m. to Monday, September 21 at 5:00 a.m. 
  • (COMPLETED) Saturday, September 26 from 2:00 a.m. to Sunday, September 7 at 7:00 p.m.
  • (COMPLETED) Friday, October 30 at 11:00 p.m. until Monday, November 2 at 5:00 a.m.
  • Thursday, November 5 from 11:00 pm to Friday, November 6 at 5:00 am
  • Friday, November 6 from 11:00 pm to Saturday, November 7 at 10:00 am

On these weekends, although a detour will be possible via the A40 West service road, we recommend that users avoid the area. The above dates are subject to change.

The REM on the West Island

  • 14.5 km of elevated structure will be built along the A40 and towards the Technoparc Montréal
    • 2 launch beams, dubbed Anne and Marie, are carrying out the work to build it
  • 3 elevated stations will be built around this structure
    • Des Sources
    • Fairview-Pointe-Claire
    • Kirkland
  • Peak-time frequency: 10 minutes
  • Off-peak and weekend frequency: 15 minutes
  • Open 7 days a week, from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Progress

  • Nearly 6 built kilometres of the 14.5 km planned for the elevated structure 
  • Approximately 1,770 segments in place out of the 4,102 planned
  • More than 260 pillars completed out of the 367 planned
  • Foundation work for 2 stations (Anse-à-l’Orme and Fairview-Pointe-Claire) is in progress
